Campus Outreach

The Global Women’s Institute (GWI) utilizes its platform in the university community to try and inspire a new generation of leaders who are engaged with gender issues and actively involved in creating tangible progress in the field.

There are a variety of ways GWI engages with the George Washington University (GWU) campus community on the issue of gender equality. One of these is to partner with and support the efforts of the thriving GWU student organization community. GWI has co-sponsored myriad campus events with and for university students, including:

  • a DC launch of the UN HeForShe campaign, which drew a packed room of students from across organizations and the Greek community;

  • partnering with the Allied in Pride student organization to bring Laverne Cox to speak on campus for Trans Day of Visibility;

  • hosting an annual career symposium on campus for students interested in careers in gender equality

GWI is also proud to recognize the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence each year on the GWU campus. Prior to GWI’s arrival on campus it had not been celebrated at GWU. GWI commemorates the 16 Days each year with on-campus events, which in the past have included panel discussions, report launches, film screenings, and days of student activism and service.

Students interested in furthering their gender-related career or academic pursuits find a home at GWI. GWI has employed students as part-time employees and interns, engaged students in an advisory capacity, and offered opportunities for students to work on GWI projects for their academic practicum and capstone projects.

To further our commitment to developing the next generation of leaders in gender equality, GWI hosted its first ever Career In Women’s Empowerment Symposium in 2016, with support from the GW Career Services office. At this one-day event, women’s rights professionals across sectors shared their insights with students about incorporating gender equality into their chosen career fields. Given the positive feedback on this Symposium, GWI will be hosting this event annually, though will transform it to include more interactive workshop sessions where attendees can get more practical guidance and networking experience.
