South Sudan Launch, London

During 16 Days of Activism 2017, GWI and the International Rescue Committee (IRC), in partnership with CARE UK, launched their report, "No Safe Place: A lifetime of violence for conflict-affected women and girls in South Sudan." Mary Ellsberg was in London for the European launch event hosted by the IRC at Westminster. She was joined by Sanj Srikanthan, Executive Director, IRC-UK; Dr. Pamela Lomoro, Friends of Ibba Girls' School (FIGS), South Sudan; and Prof. Charlotte Watts, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine for a conversation moderated by journalist, Jane Merrick. Lord Bates, Minister of State at the UK Department for International Development, gave the keynote address.

This research was the first population-based study of violence against women and girls (VAWG) in conflict-affected areas of South Sudan and forms one part of the What Works to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls research program, funded by the U.K. Government's Department for International Development (DFID). The IRC and GWI began the work 2014 and collected data through 2016. The findings from this groundbreaking study will impact policies and programs to prevent and respond to VAWG in South Sudan and other humanitarian settings.
